What is Community Based Health Care?

The Overall Objective of Community Based Health Care (CBHC) is to build capacity of each community to care for its own health and development initiatives. In CBHC approach Health and Development are worked on jointly at the same time in the target community. Health and Development activities are done at the same time with full community participation and involvement and sharing benefits at the end. Eventually the community feels that it is working on its own set priorities to improve health and development.

The Role of Health workers from outside the Community is to;

A. Mobilize and bring people together so that the individuals in the Community can come together and be aware of how they can improve their own health and maintain their well being,
B. Aware of the way how they can identify their problems, set priorities, plan, implement and overcome many of their barriers to their health and development to be able to control their own community based health care by being truly “Community Based “.
C. To raise awareness to enable people in the community to come together to understand what is happening in their community/village and their surrounding districts; understand what CBHC is by understanding that prevention of diseases is very useful and worthwhile.

Understand that working together is the best way to prevent most common diseases in homes and their communities; understand that CBHC is the work of the community.
Understand that it is the responsibility of the community to make its own decisions, plans and organize activities to be done to overcome their problems. To helps the community to begin to have a clear sense of ownership of what they are doing to improve their own health and development.

D. Build capacity of the community through conducting training workshops to train CHWs and Community to facilitate the Community’s learning, through participation by doing so that the community members can go back and implement learnt knowledge and skills to be self-reliant at the end.

E. Provide follow-up support, through conducting regular field visits to the community for up to five years to give technical support, encouragement, advice and further training.

To be able to achieve all the above the program needs to be flexible in planning so that the program is able to work in participatory way with the community members to address their own problems.
